Definitely a Craft June 28, 2010 Hattie Hedrick (Murrieta, CA) Research is most definitely a craft and as with all research books, there is a great deal written about scientific research and medical research. Generic research guides do little to offer help to Musicological research. Yet this is a helpful resource tool if taken generically.
Required Textbook June 2, 2010 Kimberly M. Crockett (Birmingham, AL) This book arrived in excellent condition within a timely manner. Also it is an easy read (even though it is required).
Any edition of this book is money well spent. June 1, 2010 J. Brown (Western Mass/Melbourne Australia) I came across this book when I was talking a research writing class at University and it is one of my most treasured resources. Whether you are a high school student, undergrad, or published graduate this book will help you formulate solid arguments and lead your reader down a path that is logical and cohesive. Your reader might not agree with all your conclusions but they will see the elegance of your arguments.
Mandatory for any Researcher either Begineer or Pro March 8, 2010 JOSE FERREIRA PINTO (Macau) If you are into research keep a copy for yourself and nearby your belongings or just about at any place where you sit upon and write your research. This book is by far the most compelling, simple and well written about research methods. It's simplicity may at first be seen as something for beginners. But I challenge you to read it and then do let me know if you have not unveiled the masterpiece that this book is. You make use of every sentence, every quote in any stage of your research. So read it and re-read it.
Mandatory for academic research, optional for anything else February 15, 2010 Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA)
This book is literally a classic because it thoroughly covers the challenges involved in basic academic research. It is intended as a course between covers on academic researchers. It covers formulation of issues and questions, determining and finding stories, making your claims and how to write and support them. Overall, it will be of use to anyone who is new to academic research and writing.
It is not a guide to sources nor a treatise on using particular resources. Rather it is more along the line of teaching principles of effective research and academic writing.
It serves students well, but is lacking for those with real-world research needs, such as in business and law.
Overall, like so many academic style guides, a nice book to keep on the shelf if you are outside of academia, but not a necessary one.
Jerry
