This book is good for practicing on actual GMAT questions July 29, 2010 Jenny J.J.I. (That Lives in Carolinas) I grab this book immediately after I decided to take GMAT test. I have to say that this book helped me highly. This GMAT book is a good collection of the toughest questions that can be found. Moreover, it gives some guidance on how to get through the questions, but the real value is simply going through them all and figuring out the patterns yourself. Furthermore, this book has very detailed reviews for each question that help you to understand the systematic of the test questions.
However, it is pierced with noteworthy errors in content. I'm not talking about grammatical type but errors in the information it provides as background to help you prepare to take the exam. The major dilemma with this is that I only have expertise enough to identify these errors in the biology section how then can I trust the information in chemistry and physics Kaplan needs to sincerely edit this book otherwise it's just a series of practice exams which are helpful at this point. I am back to using old textbooks rather than the content that I paid for in this book.
Aside from that I do recommend Kaplan GMAT 2010-2011 for prep reasonings.
I like the book but found a few errors July 22, 2010 Golden Lion (North Ogden, Ut United States) I found a few errors in calculations when working out the equations. The errors didn't change the output of the logic, but did cause frustration when attempting to walk through the steps when demonstrating the solution to a colleague.
The book caused me to reflect on some of the axioms and correlations taught in College Algebra which I wish were applied to memory. There are short cuts in Advanced math to deducing answers to many of the problems, especially linear algebra. However, each of the solutions has carefully explained explanations and is broken down into an analytical narrative, so you could repeat the same mental processes during the testing.
Significant improvement over the old prep books July 22, 2010 Todd Justman (Detroit, MI) I took the GMAT many years ago and I wish I had this kind of prep book to use. For those considering an MBA, no matter how much the school plays down the GMAT, make no mistake that unless you bring to the table something interesting or exceptional to the program, your GMAT matters A LOT. You can only get one MBA from only one school, and your GMAT opens doors - or closes doors. Additionally, if you want consulting those firms may ask you for your GMAT score. That, plus the amount of intense preparation your competition puts into this score means that you need to do everything you can to prep. Don't stop at this book, consider a formal prep course. You'll spend tens of thousands on a top school, don't skimp on the GMAT (like I did).
The book covers a lot of ground that is helpful. Tips on preparing for the test, including mocking up the same materials that you'll have in the test. There's also info on applying to schools, what to consider, etc. You should know all of that but it's here again to reinforce. And there's the prep itself. A LOT of it. Five complete tests (4 online and 1 in the book), which is much more than I had with my old prep book. I like the practice question hints and advice. There's a lot of focus on triangles, for example, which you should know cold. Quadratic equations are covered a little as well. The book explains the adaptive questioning method, and it seems that it's changed a bit from the old days when your first few questions determined your score (at least that's what my old book said).
I didn't test the CD-ROM but I noted that there's no system guidance on what kind of computer is needed to run the software. This is a big gap, and after reading comments about compatibility issues for Windows 7, this is a downright problem. Without the extra testing content on the disk, I wouldn't get this book. You want to take several practice tests if you can so that the actual test experience won't be a stressor/distraction. Make sure the disk will run on your PC before getting this prep book.
CD-ROM doesn't work with Vista or 7 July 20, 2010 Jeremy The CD-ROM that comes with this book does not work with most Vista 32-bit systems and doesn't work at all with Vista 64-bit or Windows 7. However, the inside cover of the book says it is compatible with Vista. DO NOT purchase this if you have a Vista or new system. I contacted Kaplan Tech Support about this issue and they acknowledged that their CD-ROM does not work with Vista and they do not have a solution. The online syllabus is also based on a different version than the 2010-2011, thus making it confusing when trying to use the syllabus to plan your studying. Avoid this product and choose a cheaper better made study guide.
Horrible. the CD doesn't work. July 19, 2010 S. Yu (Kentucky, USA) The CD-ROM that comes with this book, which is an integral part of the book as it contains the live practice material, does not work. It's not just some error that you can fix, it literally will not install on Windows Vista or Windows 7. This is in direct contradiction to what it says inside the book where it claims that the software is compatible with Windows Vista. That claim is absolutely false. Kaplan knows but they don't care. They're raking it in and don't care about people like us who buy their books. I've wasted a lot of time and money on this book, I hope Kaplan enjoys my $40.
